In order to meet the requirements of the modern E/E vehicle architecture, traditional relays and fuses are no longer applicable, so partially or fully electrified primary and secondary power distribution has become a necessary choice. In order to solve this problem, Infineon has launched a new generation of ultra-low resistance high-side switch family series Power PROFET™ +12V in TO lead-free package.
Power PROFET™+12V series products support new installation locations and housing options, helping to realize a new generation of high-efficiency distributed power architectures. The series offers two models, the BTS50005-1LUA with an RDS(ON) of 0.6 mΩ and the BTS50010-1LUA with an RDS(ON) of 1.0 mΩ, featuring the lowest power loss in the industry . These two products are designed for controlling high current applications such as heaters, pumps and fans, and are especially suitable for hot cabin and engine compartment environments requiring high inrush currents. In addition, the switching cycles of these two products can reach more than 1 million times, which is much higher than the average switching cycle of 200,000 times for relays.
These switches can replace electromechanical relays, fuses and discrete circuits in distribution boxes and other applications up to 65A in 12V electrical systems. In addition, these two switches also have a variety of built-in protection and diagnostic functions, such as short-circuit, over-current and over-temperature protection. Therefore, these devices not only provide comprehensive integrated protection, but also provide a fault signal to the connected microcontroller via the diagnostic pin for advanced diagnostics. With their robustness and protection diagnostics, these two switches can prevent power distribution network failures and improve the reliability of the whole vehicle.
The two smart power switches are housed in an 8-pin TO lead-free package, which requires 23% less board space than the traditional D2PAK package, but has comparable thermal performance to D2PAK. The load current sensing accuracy is improved to 5% and can be evaluated by reading the analog voltage on the IS pin. Additionally, the series is PRO-SIL™ ISO 26262 certified and comes with safety instructions to support ISO 26262-compliant hardware component evaluation.
To simplify the design-in process for Power PROFET™ +12V devices, the family has been integrated into the Infineon Smart Switch In-Fuse Tool and the Infineon Smart Power Switch kILIS tool, available from the Infineon Developer Center. The Infineon Smart Switch Built-in Fuse Tool supports the calculation of fusing characteristics under specific boundary conditions based on the embedded over-temperature protection function of the selected product. The kILIS tool is used to calculate and visualize the current sensing range of a selected product at a specific load current, taking into account factors such as kILIS rate, current sense resistor and ADC tolerance.
