Introducing the New STM32H5 Series Microcontrollers by STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has recently introduced the STM32H523 and STM32H533 microcontrollers as part of its new STM32H5 series, marking the debut of devices with 256 KB or 512 KB dual bank flash memory (depending on the model) and 272 KB of RAM. The flagship STM32H5 series previously released features flash memory capacities of up to 1024 KB or 2048 KB. Therefore, these new 256/512 KB flash memory products are particularly suitable for applications that are cost-sensitive, do not require additional memory, but still need over 128 KB of flash memory (as provided in the STM32H503). ST continues to expand the STM32H5 product lineup to help customers find the most cost-effective product configurations.

The STM32H523/533 microcontrollers come with two I3C interfaces, a USB full-speed controller with Power Delivery (PD), and an SDMMC interface. Additionally, the STM32H533 supports ST-iRoT and is available in various package forms including 32/48/68-pin QFN, 25/39/80-pin WLCSP, 48/64/100/144/176-pin LQFP, and 100/144/169/176-pin UFBGA, offering high flexibility in selection.

Furthermore, the corresponding development board NUCLEO-H533RE will also be launched to assist developers in evaluating chip performance and prototyping products.

As an upgrade to the STM32F4, the STM32H5 features a powerful Cortex-M33 core operating at 250 MHz, achieving a CoreMark score of up to 1023. It is equipped with 2 MB dual bank flash memory and 640 KB of RAM, including CORDIC and FMAC accelerators. The STM32H5 is the first MCU product to integrate hardware-based ST-iRoT, compliant with SESIP3 and PSA Level 3 certifications, perfectly balancing cost optimization and performance enhancement.

The STM32H5 series simplifies industrial application designs that prioritize security, with use cases including smart home appliances like air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and alarm systems; factory automation such as PLCs, motor control, and industrial pumps; smart city communication gateways, lighting control, and energy conversion; as well as consumer applications like keyboards, tracking devices, and medical accessories.

The STM32H5 is the first STM32 device to include the I3C (Improved Inter-Integrated Circuit) interface, significantly improving bus speeds. With embedded systems handling more sensor data, this becomes increasingly important. The I3C operates at a frequency of 12.5 MHz, about 12 times faster than I2C. This new technology also supports dynamic addressing, enabling the MCU to communicate with more devices simultaneously, reducing pin usage. The STM32H5 also integrates many common interfaces such as CAN-FD, HDMI-CEC, and USB-C power delivery.

The STM32H5 features two 12-bit ADCs and DACs to meet the demands of applications requiring fast data acquisition or multiple interfaces. It also integrates numerous timers, including two 16-bit advanced timers for motor control applications. The dual bank Flash memory of the STM32H5 allows for Over-The-Air (OTA) updates without the need to shut down the system, a crucial feature for industrial applications. Overall, the architecture of the STM32H5 achieves an ideal balance of flexibility and forward-thinking.

Similar to other STM32 MCU series, this series offers high reliability and efficiency, operating at 125°C to meet the needs of industrial applications. Furthermore, ST equips some STM32H5 devices with flexible power modes such as Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS), enabling higher energy efficiency, consuming only 46µA in Stop mode (with all I/Os enabled). This means that STM32H5 can utilize more cost-effective packaging forms, providing users with increased support in cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
