USB is the most popular connectivity technology today, and with the industry convergence of USB Power Delivery (PD) standards, the power landscape is becoming increasingly simplified. With the European Union (EU) approving the adoption of the USB-C® connector and new directives compliant with USB-IF protocols, all manufacturers must equip their products with USB-C cables for charging. Designers must address new challenges to protect systems from the additional risks of damage to internal circuits posed by the high voltage, high power levels required by the latest USB power specifications, as well as the potential use of non-compliant cables by consumers.
Microchip is pleased to announce the launch of the latest product in the USB Type-C® port protector series, the UCS4002, to support high voltage, high current USB PD applications. Leveraging Microchip's expertise in USB overall system solutions, OEMs can quickly design new features with minimal effort and risk.
Product Overview:
The UCS4002 is an integrated VCONN FET suitable for D+, D-, and Configuration Channel (CC) in USB Type-C port protection. D+, D-, CC, and SG_SENS (ground short) all have ESD protection to meet the IEC 61000-4-2 standard. The UCS4002 provides battery short circuit protection on D+, D-, and CC. It also offers battery-to-ground short circuit protection for charging ports. The UCS4002 can protect loads on the application VCONN from being supplied with higher-than-expected voltage (overvoltage lockout) and provides overcurrent protection (overcurrent lockout). Additionally, the UCS4002 implements VDD undervoltage lockout protection. It also features a thermal shutdown circuit that will deactivate the port protector device when the junction temperature exceeds the limit. The UCS4002 is a pass-through device, transparent to the application, and does not affect the signal integrity of USB data lines or the expected functionality of USB applications.
Key Features of UCS4002:
Battery short circuit protection on D+, D-, and CC (24V DC)
Integrated switch FET with overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and reverse voltage protection, controllable via VCONN voltage
Battery-to-ground short circuit protection for charging ports
