On January 10, 2024, NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI), the world's leading semiconductor company, announced the launch of a new automotive radar single-chip series SAF86xx, paving the way for the future of software-defined cars. This series of single chips integrates high-performance radar transceivers, multi-core radar processing
processor and MACsec hardware engine to achieve advanced secure data communication and seamless connection with automotive Ethernet. Paired with NXP's S32 high-performance processor, in-vehicle network connectivity and power management, the SAF86xx provides a complete system solution and lays a solid foundation for the implementation of advanced software-defined radar technology.
The SAF86xx's highly integrated radar SoC (system on a chip) is expected to be able to stream large amounts of low-level radar sensor data at up to 1Gbit/s, helping automakers optimize next-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for software-defined cars. while supporting a smooth transition to the new architecture. The product supports over-the-air remote upgrades (OTA), allowing automakers to easily add new software-defined radar capabilities throughout the vehicle's lifecycle.
NXP releases a new generation of automotive radar single-chip series to create a software-defined automotive future
SAF86xx adopts a common architecture, which is the same as the SAF85xx released last year, but has significantly improved 28nm RFCMOS performance, providing stronger support for the capabilities of radar sensors. Tier 1 suppliers can use this new product to build more compact and efficient radar sensors. Its detection range extends to 300m away, enabling more reliable detection of small objects such as curbs and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, providing drivers and other road users with more comprehensive and efficient safety protection.
As a leading supplier of automotive electronics, HELLA will develop its seventh-generation radar product portfolio based on NXP's SoC family of products, including different versions of front radar, rear radar, corner radar and side radar. Dr. Dietmar Stapel, Vice President and Radar Program Manager at HELLA, said: “Choosing to cooperate with NXP is the right decision. With NXP’s radar technology, we have become the main supplier of automotive 77/79GHz angular radar sensors. Now, By using the SAF86xx radar single-chip family, we plan to strengthen our market position and provide radar solutions for all radar-supported related functions, even in level 4 autonomous driving."
The new generation radar single-chip family supports NCAP safety features including emergency braking and blind spot detection. At the same time, it also provides support for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving applications, including SAE Level 2+ and 3 advanced comfort features such as traffic jam assist, high-speed cruise and parking assist, and front and rear cross-traffic warning. and lateral and rear impact protection.
Steffen Spannagel, senior vice president and general manager of ADAS at NXP Semiconductors, said: "The SAF86xx radar single-chip family enables OEMs to easily and quickly migrate their current radar platforms to new software-defined automotive architectures. Such radar sensors are connected into a vast network, And using a dedicated S32R radar processor in a distributed architecture can enhance radar-based perception capabilities and provide support for the development of autonomous driving technology. It includes 360-degree sensing, more powerful artificial intelligence algorithms and secure OTA software updates .”
The SAF8xxx series includes the SAF86xx and SAF85xx, providing customized solutions for various OEMs' different use cases. It supports a range of sensor outputs, including object, point cloud or range FFT-level data from distributed streaming sensors in today's edge computing sensor architectures and future distributed architectures.
By expanding its third-generation RFCMOS radar platform, NXP continues to lead the field of automotive radar technology, achieving tens of millions of mass production deliveries and helping the automotive industry achieve a safer and smarter future.
