STMicroelectronics Introduces High-Performance ST4E1240 RS-485 Transceiver Chip

STMicroelectronics has recently unveiled the new ST4E1240 RS-485 transceiver chip, which provides a powerful signal transmission solution for modern high-performance industrial applications with its outstanding performance and rich features.

As the first product in STMicroelectronics' new series of transceiver chips, the ST4E1240 boasts a transmission speed of up to 40Mbit/s, far exceeding the traditional RS-485 standard, greatly enhancing the efficiency and reliability of data transmission. Additionally, the chip is PROFIBUS-compatible, allowing seamless integration with popular fieldbus standards to meet the needs of various industrial applications.

In practical applications, the ST4E1240 transceiver chip supports multi-point cable connections up to long distances, with the ability to connect over 64 transceivers on the bus, providing greater flexibility and scalability for industrial control systems. Whether in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), robotics, telecommunications infrastructure, smart building controls, servo drives, fiber optic network equipment, and other fields, the ST4E1240 demonstrates its exceptional performance and stability.

The ST4E1240 is equipped with robust protection features to ensure data integrity and bus stability. It includes transient protection functions compliant with the IEC 61000-4-2 standard, with contact discharge withstand voltages up to +/-12kV, eliminating the need for external ESD protection devices. Moreover, the chip features Class A fast transient protection up to +/-4kV, meeting the requirements of the IEC 61000-4-4 standard, effectively preventing interference and damage caused by transient voltages on the bus.

The ST4E1240 also features hot-plug capability to prevent unnecessary states on the bus during device power-up or insertion, releasing up to 100pF of parasitic capacitance. Additionally, its fault-safe protection function raises the output voltage when detecting open circuits, short circuits, or idle buses, avoiding uncertain states.

To meet the requirements of different application scenarios, the ST4E1240 offers various control functions. Through external enable pins, users can control the chip's shutdown mode, reducing static current to below 3.5μA, making it ideal for power-sensitive applications. Furthermore, the chip includes 250mA short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown functions, enhancing system stability and safety.

The ST4E1240 RS-485 transceiver chip is part of STMicroelectronics' ten-year long-term supply guarantee program, ensuring customers have access to continuous and stable supply. The chip is currently in production and is available in an SO-8 4.9mm x 3.91mm package for easy integration and application.
