Renesas RZ/G3S MPU: High-Performance, High-Security, High-Flexibility Industrial IoT Solution

With the continuous development of industrial Internet of Things (IoT) technology, billions of embedded devices have seamlessly interconnected. In this vast landscape, gateways serve as crucial hubs connecting devices and networks, underscoring their importance. To meet the market demand for high performance, high security, and high flexibility industrial gateways, Renesas has introduced a SOM (System on Module) solution based on the Arm® Cortex®-A55 (1.1GHz) and dual Cortex®-M33 (250MHz) MPU. This solution aims to accelerate the development of IoT applications and reduce design risks.

Renesas

Solution Overview
The solution consists of a versatile OSM carrier board and a compatible OSM module. At its core is the integrated RZ/G3S MPU, which features a primary CPU with a maximum operating frequency of 1.1GHz using Arm® Cortex®-A55, and two Cortex-M33 secondary CPUs operating at 250MHz. Users can allocate workload to the secondary CPUs, enabling efficient handling of tasks such as sensor data reception, system function control, and power management. Additionally, the RZ/G3S supports low power modes and PCI Express interface for high-speed connectivity with 5G wireless modules. Moreover, the product includes enhanced security features like tamper detection to ensure data security.

Power Design
The carrier board incorporates an ISL81401 synchronous buck-boost controller, two SLG59H1341C load switches, ISL80015 buck regulator, SLG59M1557V load switch, and RAA210030 power module. The ISL81401 is a bi-directional four-switch synchronous buck-boost controller that supports peak and average current detection. Internally, the ISL81401 utilizes a unique buck-boost control algorithm and features input voltage/current, output voltage/current control, and multiple protection circuits to ensure stable bi-directional operation.

Power Supply
For MPU power supply, the solution utilizes the DA9063L multi-channel power management IC paired with the SLG59M1557V load switch to provide stable power to the system. The DA9063L offers flexible output current and power rail configurations, with six built-in DC/DC buck converters capable of delivering up to 12A total current. It achieves high efficiency across a wide load range through automatic selection of pulse frequency modulation (PFM) or pulse width modulation (PWM) modes.

Feature Expansion
In addition to efficient power design, the solution integrates the AT25QL128A flash memory and 5L35023 programmable clock to support the system module. The AT25QL128A is a standard code and data storage chip designed for low-voltage systems, where program code is executed from flash and mapped to embedded or external RAM. The 5L35023 is a VersaClock programmable clock generator designed for low-power and high-performance PCI Express applications. Featuring a 3 PLL architecture with each PLL programmable independently, it allows for up to 5 frequency outputs. Moreover, the 5L35023 includes programmable VCO and PLL source selection functions, enabling users to optimize power performance according to application requirements.

Through the aforementioned design and integration, the Renesas RZ/G3S MPU provides a high-performance, high-security, and high-flexibility solution for industrial IoT gateways, driving the advancement of industrial IoT technology.
